The Sigil of Jophiel

The Angels of The 72 Letter Name

The angels in this part of the book offer many ways to work on practical problems. The ritual structure for The 72 Angels is roughly the same as for other rituals, but you are given an Admitting Word that assists with the process. Each Admitting Word may appear to be nonsense. For the first angel, for example, this is the admitting word: EE-AH-HAH-VUH-HAH. This word combination is arrived at by combining divine names with the angelic name (in Hebrew), and this makes contact with the angel much more effective. It is, however, impossible to translate this admitting word, as it is effectively an anagram of the word God and the angel’s name.

The angel names themselves have a fascinating origin, being based on The 72 Letter Name of God. There are many books written on the history and origin of The 72 Letter Name. You may be interested to know that three verses of Exodus (being 14: 19-21) are written right to left, with the next line going left to right, and the final line going right to left. In each resultant column, you find three letters, which gives you a sound. The first column gives you three letters that make the sound Vehu. Add the word El (meaning God), and you have Vehuel, which translates as The Angel Vehu of God. The first angel is Vehuel, and the other 72 angels are named in the same way.

Some authors do not use the El word ending, but instead choose iah, or ‘Yah’. This is perfectly acceptable, but I have chosen to use El throughout, because I have found this consistency makes the magick effective. This means that you may find Vehuel being described as Vehuiah in other texts. This is of no concern unless you choose to be concerned about it. You can use either name and you will be contacting the same angel.

When researching these names you will find great inconsistency, especially online. For example, the twenty-fourth angel, in this book described as Chahoel (and pronounced as KAH-HAW-ELL) appears in many texts as Chahuiah or Hahuiah, and the last time I looked at Wikipedia the name was listed as Haniniah. As mentioned, there are many contradictions and variations, but you can be assured that what you find in this book is derived from interpretations of the original Hebrew, and these intonations have been found (over many years) to make for excellent contact with the correct angels. This is a source you can trust.

You should also take care to note that some angels, although quite distinct from one another, share similar names. Hahahel and Hahael are almost identical when written on the page, and even when spoken aloud, as are Daniel and Dahniel, but their sigils and powers are not at all the same. Be aware that they are, in fact, completely different angels.

You are also instructed to read out a line from a psalm as part of the ritual. If you
